چکیده

This paper investigates the first four formant frequencies of 60 normal Malaysian Indian young adults in sustained vowels using acoustical analysis. The F1, F2, F3 and F4 of Malaysian Indian males were reported at 359±87 Hz, 1457±630 Hz, 2799 ±336 Hz and 3777 ± 299 Hz respectively. The F1, F2, F3 and F4 of Malaysian Indian females were reported at 485±172 Hz, 1707±746 Hz, 3081±330 Hz and 4305±288 Hz respectively. Malaysian Indian females had significant higher formant frequencies in all vowels than those of Indian males except F2 and F3 in /u/. Besides that, significant differences in all the formant frequencies were observed across all the vowels for both Indian males and females. Significant interactions between vowels and gender were found in F1, F2 and F3 but not in F4. Keywords— Formant Frequency, Sustained Vowels, Malaysian Indian, Young Adults

Formant frequencies of Malay vowels produced by Malay children aged between 7 and 12 years.

The formant frequencies of Malaysian Malay children have not been well studied. This article investigates the first four formant frequencies of sustained vowels in 360 Malay children aged between 7 and 12 years using acoustical analysis. Generally, Malay female children had higher formant frequencies than those of their male counterparts. However, no significant differences in all four formant ...

Acoustic characteristics of vowels by normal Malaysian Malay young adults.

The acoustic characteristics of sustained vowel have been widely investigated across various languages and ethnic groups. These acoustic measures, including fundamental frequency (F(0)), jitter (Jitt), relative average perturbation (RAP), five-point period perturbation quotient (PPQ5), shimmer (Shim), and 11-point amplitude perturbation quotient (APQ11) are not well established for Malaysian Ma...

Study and Comparison of Formant Characteristics of Persian Vowels in 4-7-year-old Children Using Cochlear Implants and Those Using Hearing Aids

Background and Objective: One of the most important physical properties of vowels is their formant structure. One of the most obvious speech errors in hearing-impaired children is vowel errors. The present study aimed to determine and compare the formant structure of Persian vowels in deaf and cochlear implant children in the age range of 4-7 years. Materials and Methods: This descriptive-anal...

Time-varying spectral change in the vowels of children and adults.

Recent studies have shown that time-varying changes in formant pattern contribute to the phonetic specification of vowels. This variation could be especially important in children's vowels, because children have higher fundamental frequencies (f0's) than adults, and formant-frequency estimation is generally less reliable when f0 is high. To investigate the contribution of time-varying changes i...

Formant Structure of Vowels Produced By Hindi Esophageal Speakers: A Comparative Study

Aim: To investigate the characteristics of vocal tract resonance in Hindi Esophageal Speakers. Methodology: Five normal Hindi speakers and five Hindi esophageal speakers participated in this study. They were asked to produce the three corner vowels /a/, /i/, and /u/ in the three different conditions like nonsustained, sustained and word level. The average first three formant frequencies F1, F2,...
